Fear VS. Opportunity

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Galatians 6:10

Have you ever asked God, “Please give me opportunities where I can share you with others”?

Yeah? Maybe?

Have you ever asked God, “Please give me opportunities where I can be really, really uncomfortable?”

No?

I’ve discovered something. Asking God for opportunities is just about the same thing as asking him to pull you out of your comfort zone.

I’ve noticed that every time I ask God for opportunities – every time – an opportunity presents itself. God will answer your prayers. He’ll take them seriously. But usually, this means that you need to step out of your comfort zone and do something that seems a little scary.

This week I was asked to read a poem of mine titled “Rest” during the services at our church. It was an exciting opportunity. I’ve been asking God to use me to share his heart, and he’s answering my prayers.

But I was scared. Not only would I have to stand up in front of the whole church and actually talk, but I would be sharing something that I wrote.

Yup, I’m an introvert. According to 16personalities, I’m roughly 75% introverted. I don’t know how relevant that is, but basically, talking in front of a bunch of people is hard for me. I like being alone in my little corner and watching things happen, rather than being the center of attention.

And I know that as a writer, especially, sharing my work can be hard. It’s like baring my heart and hoping nobody squashes it.

As I said, I was scared. I was honestly looking forward to having it over with. As I told my mom, “I’d prefer that it was ‘have done’ rather than ‘still have to do’.”

But this morning, as I sat waiting to go up and read my poem, I could sense God whispering to me,

“I’m with you. Always. When I ask you to be uncomfortable, it will lead to good things.”

I read my poem, and I can’t tell you how many people approached me afterward and told me that it touched them. Even if just one person benefited from my discomfort, it’s worth it. Isn’t it cool to think that God speaks to other people through us? It’s pretty exciting.

(Just for fun, here’s a song by Josh Garrels that I love – oddly fitting.)

I’d encourage you to ask God for opportunities. And when they come, be brave. It’s hard, yes, and your knees may knock, but if you follow where the Spirit is leading, good things will come from it.
