Fear VS. Opportunity
“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
Galatians 6:10
Have you ever asked God, “Please give me opportunities where I can share you with others”?
Yeah? Maybe?
Have you ever asked God, “Please give me opportunities where I can be really, really uncomfortable?”
No?
I’ve discovered something. Asking God for opportunities is just about the same thing as asking him to pull you out of your comfort zone.
I’ve noticed that every time I ask God for opportunities – every time – an opportunity presents itself. God will answer your prayers. He’ll take them seriously. But usually, this means that you need to step out of your comfort zone and do something that seems a little scary.
This week I was asked to read a poem of mine titled “Rest” during the services at our church. It was an exciting opportunity. I’ve been asking God to use me to share his heart, and he’s answering my prayers.
But I was scared. Not only would I have to stand up in front of the whole church and actually talk, but I would be sharing something that I wrote.
Yup, I’m an introvert. According to 16personalities, I’m roughly 75% introverted. I don’t know how relevant that is, but basically, talking in front of a bunch of people is hard for me. I like being alone in my little corner and watching things happen, rather than being the center of attention.
And I know that as a writer, especially, sharing my work can be hard. It’s like baring my heart and hoping nobody squashes it.
As I said, I was scared. I was honestly looking forward to having it over with. As I told my mom, “I’d prefer that it was ‘have done’ rather than ‘still have to do’.”
But this morning, as I sat waiting to go up and read my poem, I could sense God whispering to me,
“I’m with you. Always. When I ask you to be uncomfortable, it will lead to good things.”
I read my poem, and I can’t tell you how many people approached me afterward and told me that it touched them. Even if just one person benefited from my discomfort, it’s worth it. Isn’t it cool to think that God speaks to other people through us? It’s pretty exciting.
(Just for fun, here’s a song by Josh Garrels that I love – oddly fitting.)
I’d encourage you to ask God for opportunities. And when they come, be brave. It’s hard, yes, and your knees may knock, but if you follow where the Spirit is leading, good things will come from it.
This reminded me of a quote from a movie called “Evan Almighty,” you may or may not have seen it before, I don’t know. But the character who plays God says, “If you ask for patience, will God give you patience or will He give you the opportunity to be patient?”
That really spoke to me, and then you posted this, Abby.
You were given an opportunity, and you took it.
This is really encouraging.
Thank you for sharing! <3

Hey Caelie,
Yes, I’ve seen Evan Almighty– and that line spoke to me as well. I am so glad that this post was able to encourage you!
Abby
I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve missed opportunities like this, after asking God to give me those chances. This was a great reminder. Thank you.
Book recommendation, because I’m that kind of person, “Do Hard Things” by Alex and Brett Harris. Its a great read, and challenged me in many ways.
Hey Stella,
Thanks for your comment. So glad this was encouraging to you.
And thanks for the recommendation!

I love this Abby. I agree — and there are so many chances God gives us that we don’t even notice much less take!!
Thank you for this reminder.❤️
Thanks so much, Ally.
This is great!
I try to look for opportunities to share the gospel with others, and this has really encouraged me to pray for those moments to share God’s word with others.
Thanks again!
I’m so glad this could encourage you!😊
Abby, thank you so much for this beautiful encouragement! You have inspired me to continue to ask God for those opportunities to share Him with others and not to be afraid to stand up. So many times I have seen the littlest thing- a word, a song, a kind note you didn’t even intend to send when you started off your day- change big things. And it scary sometimes to show God’s light to the world around us but you’ve reminded all of us that we need to take these opportunities. Thank you!
