It’s that time of year again. The beginning of December, when things seem to at once speed up and slow down.

Last night my family started Advent, which is our December tradition. Every night of December, we gather around in the living room, light one of our 24 candles, and read a story, sometimes sing a song. It’s a time for slowing down and remembering what this time of year is all about: celebrating the coming of Jesus.

I love Christmas time. Seeing the tree and all the lights, and drinking eggnog. And wearing Christmas socks. Can’t forget those.

But this year especially, I think I’m more aware of the fact that Christmas is really all about Jesus. In years past, I’d know that, and I’d enjoy the fact, but I don’t think I really understood it.

Like, God. Came. To. Earth.

For us.

It’s amazing.

This year has been a really big one in my faith journey. I know I still have a long way to go. But the past year, I’ve begun to understand things better. His love, for one thing. It’s… crazy. Bigger than I thought. And, the fact that God delights in us. He doesn’t just love us, he actually likes us. Isn’t that cool?

“He will take great delight in you…”

So, while I am still busy with fun Christmas songs, eating cookies (and breakfast sandwiches, for man can not live on cookies alone), enjoying the lights, and fluffy socks, I’m going to be taking some time this month to reflect on our Lord. Because he’s worth it.
